In March 2019, Seattle Channel’s City Inside/Out examined the proposed redevelopment of the former Fort Lawton Army Reserve Center near Discovery Park. The discussion came after years of debate over how the federal property should be used, with the City of Seattle considering a redevelopment plan that included affordable and supportive housing alongside new parks and open space.

A Debate Over Fort Lawton’s Future
At the time of the discussion, the proposed redevelopment called for nearly 240 units of subsidized housing as well as more than 21 acres of parks and open space. Supporters argued that the project could help address Seattle’s affordable housing needs, while opponents questioned whether Fort Lawton was an appropriate location for housing and emphasized the importance of preserving the site as open space connected to Discovery Park.
The debate reflected a larger question that continues to shape conversations about Fort Lawton: How should the remaining former military lands be used, and what role should open space play in the future of Discovery Park?
