John Charles Olmsted, regarding the landscape of Fort Lawton
This walking tour will be led by members of both Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks and Friends of Discovery Park. Participants will learn about landscape architect John Charles Olmsted’s original impressions and vision for Fort Lawton, which was later renamed Discovery Park in the 1970’s.
Olmsted envisioned this landscape as the northern anchor of Seattle’s interconnected system of parks and boulevards, extending throughout the city from Seward Park in the southeast. Today, Discovery Park continues to reflect many of the principles that shaped Olmsted’s vision, including access to nature, open space, and scenic views.
The walking tour will begin and end at Discovery Park’s south parking lot, accessed from West Emerson Street near 43rd Ave. From there, we will loop through the central portion of the park and the western bluff, highlighting the landscape, history, and design elements that make Discovery Park one of Seattle’s most treasured open spaces. The walk is approximately 2 miles long.
